A coalition of various organizations, NGOs, LGUs and many more led by Rotary International Disttrict 3860, Cebu Medical Society, Philippines College of Surgeons and AMRO, have formed the Cebu Inter-Organizational Anti-Dengue Mosquito Larvicide Campaign against dengue-carrying mosquitoes this year.
Dr. Wyben R. Briones, past president of the Cebu Medical Society (CMS) and Rotary International District 3860 Chair for dengue eradication, presided over the group’s coordination meeting the other day, when they discussed the Dengue Summit on June 14 and the budget for their anti-dengue operation.
All three anti-dengue campaigns led by Briones were authorized by the Department of Health (DOH) and involved city and municipal health officers, staff and hundreds of barangay health workers (BHWs) in Cebu City and Province.
The anti-dengue coordination meeting called by Briones coincided with the day DOH Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag announced that Central Visayas has the highest number of dengue cases in the country so far this year.
DOH recorded 5,559 dengue cases in Central Visayas from January to May 2013 with 17 deaths, which is almost 15 percent of the national figure of 37,895 cases.
